This section might prove useful for other thinkers, but in Kierkegaard's particular case I think it might be better to actually provide a brief discussion of his major pseudonyms. Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or, Part I. (I think I've read the ones on Habermas and I took a course in Kierkegaard a few years ago and our readings were Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, Philosophical Fragments, and a few generous helpings from the Concluding Unscientific Postscript. Literary Involvement: Writer of many articles in Either/Or, possible editor or author of Diary of a Seducer, an article in Either/Or. I haven't read Kierkegaard and can't vouch for this particular book, but I have found these "Very Short Introduction" books useful when getting into a new area or author. His writings comprise the first portion of Either/Or, often categorized as the “aesthetic” portion, as A is an aesthete and represents the aesthetic stage of existence. The very best works of philosophy, things like Kierkegaard's Either/Or or Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols, don't occupy a separate category in my brain as “Great Books comma philosophy”; they stand on their own merits as truly great works. That is actually the lesson of Job, as far as anyone can tell the lesson (it's a very confusing book). In 1847 the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard publish his “Christian reflections” on “the works of love.” I have come to believe that Kierkegaard has been largely misunderstood, misrepresented, and therefore ignored by many Christians, to their own detriment. If anyone, therefore refuses to learn from Christianity how to love himself in the right way, he cannot love his neighbor either.
